“Boys & Girls Clubs programs have always focused on enhancing a child’s self-esteem. The Manadoob Program is a creative interactive curriculum that can actually increase a child’s self- esteem.  Through sequential readings and activities, youth discover an imaginary world that effectively leads them through thoughtful learning progressions where they explore the true meaning of values, diversity, and problem solving.

The Manadoob Program is full of skill-building, goal oriented fun activities that can help children learn more about themselves.  Like peeling a pomegranate or opening a papaya, there are many seeds to behold.  Manadoob contains the seeds to growing a youth’s self-esteem complete with wonder, magic, and hope.”

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County wishes to express their sincere gratitude for allowing us to participate in the Manadoob program. Currently we are using the program with kids ages 6 - 14 and they love the program.

The first week that we introduced the program the facilitator explained to the kids what the program was about and what their involvement would be. By the end of the first week a seven year old stood up in class and remarked "I'm so happy for this program, it is helping me to deal with my ADHD" We thanked him for his comments and encouraged him not to miss any of the classes as who knows, maybe the discipline learned from the program may actual him deal with his ADHD.

In the past we had kids not wanting to leave the computer room when it's time to go home; but recently that has all switched, we now have kids not wanting to leave the Manadoob classes to the extent where parents have had to sit through the class until it's ended before they are able to take their child home. We've gotten rave reviews from the parents about the program, one even went on-line to try to find her own copy so she could use it with her kids.

We love the program and look forward to our continued working relationship.

I have been running the Manadoob program at our Bryn Mawr Elementary school site for approximately 2 months.
I have a group of nine girls in second and third grade who are currently participating. We meet twice a week for approximately 90 minutes.  Because of their age and reading skills, we have had to break the assignments into much smaller chunks, usually covering one to two chapters weekly.

As we have been running this program, many other girls have expressed interest in joining, solely based on what they have heard from their friends regarding this program. The girls feel that our Manadoob group is a place that they can safely share their feelings. These girls come from a mix of ethnic backgrounds, and a mix of living situations. For most, the issue of self-esteem is a struggle for them. Through this group, they have found a place where they fit in and are welcome.

The Manadoob materials make the girls feel special. They carry their orange bags around so much that I have already had to fix one due to its strap coming off. They have decorated the outside of their bags with the markers provided, and keep asking when they will get to use the mask and wind sock.

To encourage sharing, each session the girls randomly select one stone from their bag. After reading the page regarding the stones meaning, each member shares how it made them feel, think, or otherwise affected them. I have noticed now, that outside of our Manadoob time, these girls continue to hang out. They have truly created friends through this program.

I have a need for more program supplies. I currently have 7-8 requests from other girls to join this program.
I have already given my bag and contents to one child in order to include them in this group. The girls who are interested know that we are in contact regarding this. Each day when arriving at our site they ask me if I have been able to get a bag for them so they can join us.

You have created a program that these girls are excited about, want to be a part of, and are learning and growing through. Thank you for helping us reach our members in this special way!

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Public School Teacher, Jersey City, New Jersey

I have been helping English Language Learners in grades 5 - 8 develop a communicative competence in English for the last 34 years.

I was introduced to the Manadoob Program for Self-Esteem and after reviewing it I was excited to receive a grant for the programs which I am implementing in the current semester. I am teaching 27 children from diverse ethnic backgrounds and I have always looked for tools that I could use to unify the kids in my class as a part of their learning process.

What worked so well with the Manadoob Program is that it helped to break down cultural barriers and bring the kids together as we worked through the program. It was also used as a basis for my entire curriculum for the semester as it provides tools in listening, speaking, reading, writing, arts and community outreach. The Manadoob Program is a wonderful tool for allowing kids to develop self-esteem, self reliance and self-expression as they learn from the Manadoob in curriculum based activities. And, it is fun!

I will be presenting and recommending the Manadoob Program to the New Jersey School District and I would be happy to recommend the Manadoob Program to schools across the country. Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to develop such a wonderful program for kids!

Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme

I wanted to express my warm wishes to June, Susan and Julie for allowing us to pilot the Manadoob program here at Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme. We have been running the program at seven sites which include clubhouses and after school sites. The youth who participated ranged in age from 7-14, girls and boys at varying levels of social ability. The young people and the staff love the program. We have seen this program have an impact on our young people, enabling them to have mechanisms to help them cope with issues they face on a daily basis.

This program has helped some of the young people with bullying tendencies to become more empathic towards others, and we have seen bullying decrease. The staff would love to run this program again and we know there are many more youth here who would benefit greatly from participating in the Manadoob program.

Thank-you,

The class went exceptionally well. The kids absolutely LOVED the Manadoob kits and the story we read. As we go along, I am going to write an article for our school newsletter to try to grow the program. This is something we could offer at our summer camp too!

Hi Nancy,

Just thought I would check in and let you know how the "Manadoob" is going....the kids and myself are LOVING IT!!

So much so that the kids asked if we could meet more often. So we are meeting every Saturday. We had just finished the discussion about sadness and I was amazed at how much the kids opened to me. (or the group) From the things the kids said I could tell they felt very safe and comfortable. Their posters on how people live differently were so cute, and too be able to see it from each of their perspectives was cool.

Family tree is next and chapters 3 & 4. We might get to 5 this Saturday but it seems like one I should leave for a whole session.

Unit Director Memorial Park Boys and Girls Club, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

I would like to thank you for giving the Memorial Park Boys and Girls Club the opportunity to work with the "Manadoob self-esteem kit". What I learned is that we all can use a little help with our self-esteem, but many of our youth today are challenged by this. With magazines forcing our kids to look one way, television shows wanting kids to act another and overall peer pressure the kids of today need all the help they can get.

Being involved in this program allowed the kids to be who the are. It helped them express themselves in ways they never have before. For many of the club members in the program they felt alone until they saw many of their friends speaking up.

This is a serious problem that youth of all ages are dealing with. Having a focus group and young people feeling they are special was the way we targeted the program. As an adult, we tend to forget the things our youth are going through. Working with the kids made me go back to my childhood and think about my self-esteem.

One of the main things we focused on in the group was "Liking yourself, and believing in yourself". Many club members didn't know how to talk positive about themselves. For some all they have heard is negative talk in their lives. We changed that in our focus group. Everyday, you had to say something positive about yourself and someone in the group. This activity turned into the high light of the program. The members were looking forward to saying something positive because each one knew a "feel good comment" was coming back to them.

In closing I want to tell you about a young lady we will call "Lacresha". This young lady had absolutely no self-esteem, motivation, she was not self driven. After working with her teaching her how to like herself and she was special, she has become a better student, club member, a big sister and a better person. She loves the program and tries to get others to participate in all the activities.

Sincerely,

A.Jaye Johnson

Our Manadoob program has been going very well. All of our youth are very excited and it has made an amazing impact on the youth in the program. We would love to continue to offer Manadoob in the future and expand to delivering this program to all four clubs in Central Oregon. I would like to request 100 more programs for our youth for 2010.

I will be sending a more detailed e-mail when I return after Feb. 8th including pictures and quotes from students, parents and staff. Thank you so much!

Crisis Center for Victims of Domestic Violence

We wanted to say how very thankful we were that we had the opportunity to use the Manadoob program in our emergency shelter and transitional shelters. We found the program to be interesting and to be thoughtful of life lessons that will definitely help our youth. Our Children's Program Director conducted the Manadoob groups at Interval House with some of our residents in transitional housing and only a few in the emergency shelter. As I said before, everybody loves the program and we think it is very positive.

For those families who stayed with us through the Manadoob program, it was very much enjoyed and the lessons were great. The program is well thought out, creative, and very positive in every way.

In summary, we are extremely thrilled to have been part of the Manadoob program. It is outstanding.

Thank you so very much,
Carol Williams

Thoughts on Manadoob Programme, Girlguiding, United Kingdom

The overall premise is a great one – to show that we are all connected in a necessary lesson children need to learn – a lot of children nowadays are very insular – only comfortable in their own world – they have no knowledge of their communities and sometimes their own families and therefore have no clue how they can effect the world they live in or how it affects them.

The workbook is particularly good – I am sure the children will relish completing it and take steps forward in helping themselves to a better way of life…

"Enchanted and enchanting! Manadoob: Mystery of the Moobia Stones is a read-aloud story and program for children and caregivers to share. Manadoob give voice to the very real feelings and behaviors of children (and adults) and offers wonderfully creative problem-solving approaches with hope and confidence that we can do and feel better. The stories are appealing and colorful, but not sugar-coated, in recognizing human frailties and problems and embracing all creatures. Moobia Stones and sadiki wrist bands are in! Can't wait for the next installment!"

"Manadoob stands uniquely as an allegory that is not allegorical. It captures the essence of values that we hold most dear while holding young readers mesmerized by a story well told with a palpably building excitement that keeps the pages turning.

Children will connect readily to the interactions between humans and animals and will appreciate the sophisticated vocabulary which is at once comprehensible and non-condescending.

The astonishingly exotic and beautifully drawn animal characters of Manadoobia are multi-dimensional and will captivate the hearts and imaginations of readers of all ages.

Not to be missed are the magical Moobia Stones which open a whole world of exploration and wonderment.

This is destined to become a family treasure for generations. Run, do not walk, to get Manadoob for the special child in your life and then celebrate the special gift that you have given to yourself.

Manadoob is the perfect piece for recapturing the magic of the family read-aloud experience. For young readers well past their picture book, the opportunity is here for shared reading - with a parent reading aloud one chapter and a child the next, right through to the highly satisfying ending. Many years hence, the child, then adult will recall the experience and the soul will be uplifted by it. This book deserves a prominent place in every family library."

"There is so much to learn about the ways of the world and this is where the Manadoob step in to help guide the way. The Manadoob are a wondrous creation of odd looking animals that are very wise and very loving. These ancient animals nurtured and created magical Moobia Stones to help with some of those tough questions we face every day. Manadoob is a story and a program that helps to uncover the deeper meaning of life and inspire a child's imagination to soar. Manadoob also helps give a sense of direction in what can be a very confusing world. This is a wonderful tool for growth and education."

"There are touchstones in every life that stay in our life memory banks forming our character and our sense of the universe. Although they are emotionally universal, these touchstones are often private and deeply held soul secrets. Manadoob, Mystery of the Moobia Stones invites a shared family reading experience to gently approach some of these touchstones together and collectively understand our deepest feelings especially those connected to an irreplaceable friend, a pet.

Through delightful language, surprising storytelling and enchanting imagery, the readers join Wella as she stretches her innocence into an exploration of her feelings and discovers the magic of the Moobia Stones and the guiding light of the Manadoob.

This is a perfect book for the entire family. It encourages open conversation and sharing while entertaining even the most cynical of readers. If you have ever suffered the loss of a family pet then you will embrace the Moobia Stones and be on the look out for a Sadiki band and a Manadoob encounter of your own."

Manadoob, Mystery of the Moobia Stones is like Tolkein for kids. The story creates a world full of wonderful creatures and myths we desperately want to believe in. Mystery of the Moobia Stones ends by closing one chapter while whetting the reader's appetite for MANY more adventures. It's an outstanding and beautiful book.

My two daughters ages seven and nine, along with my son, age thirteen completed the Manadoob Program for Self-Esteem.  I have never witnessed such a positive change in all three children like this.   They behave with greater kindness to one another, and they are full of gratitude and appreciation for their father and myself. I have been told that in school, all three have shown an improvement in their attitude and it is reflected in their grades.  We had never seen so many "A's" on their report cards.  This is an incredible program and I highly recommend it for every parent to consider.

Malayna is an enthusiastic child who loves all types of animals, from small to big and from domestic to exotic.  Although she already was set to be a veterinarian, her determination and passion tremendously increased after the Manadoob program.  It has also confirmed her relentless desire to help animals.  It is encouraging to see programs like this, especially in our rural community, that help foster the interests of our children and future.  Mahalo to the Hawaii Island Humane Society for providing this opportunity for our kids.
